Miami: A Fusion of Modern Glamor and Rich History

Miami and Fort Lauderdale are undoubtedly two of Florida’s most iconic destinations. Even more than that, Miami is world renowned for the sun, sand, sophistication, and upbeat attitude that the area offers. While most may see Miami as a party destination, there is definitely more than what meets the eye. Let’s go on a short trip around Miami and explore some of the other unique attractions of this beautiful city on the east coast.

The Popular Areas

While a party is never far away in Miami, the most popular areas in Miami also offer pockets of rich history.

South Beach: More than just a sunbather’s paradise, South Beach is a melting pot of cultures. The Art Deco district, exuberant nightlife, and diverse culinary scene make this area pulsate with life day and night.

Coconut Grove: One of Miami’s oldest neighborhoods, Coconut Grove is brimming with lush greenery, bohemian vibes, and waterfront views. The Grove, as locals call it, is home to the stunning Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a Renaissance-inspired estate.

Brickell & Brickell Key: Known as Miami’s financial district, Brickell seamlessly blends the corporate with the chic. Modern skyscrapers coexist with upscale dining spots, and the nightlife here promises a posh experience.

Things To Do

Miami is a huge city, and has just about everything you could ever want to do. That being said, here’s some of the most popular things to do:

Perez Art Museum: Situated in downtown Miami, this modern and contemporary art museum offers breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay and is surrounded by hanging gardens. It’s not just a place to observe art but an immersive experience.

Little Havana: Experience a slice of Cuba in Miami. From the lively Calle Ocho to the aroma of fresh Cuban coffee wafting through the streets, Little Havana is a celebration of Hispanic culture.

Bayfront Park: Overlooking the waters of Biscayne Bay, this urban park hosts numerous events, including music festivals and yoga sessions, and offers an amphitheater that has seen performances from world-renowned artists.

Fort Lauderdale: Venice of America

While Miami is often thought of as one huge city, the wider metropolitian area is over 6,000 square miles and encompasses many major cities. For me, nowhere else is better than Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale is often called the “Venice of America” due to it’s massive infrastructure of canals. In fact, Fort Lauderdale has over 160 miles of canals, which is much more than the 26 miles of Venice. Additionally, the canals of Fort Lauderdale have inhabitants! Manatees are plentiful in the canals and surely will brighten your day!

Popular Places

Las Olas Boulevard: The beating heart of Fort Lauderdale, Las Olas is a mecca for shopping, dining, and art. Stroll down the boulevard, and you’ll find galleries, boutiques, and alfresco dining spots beckoning you.

Wilton Manors: Known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, Wilton Manors is a haven of inclusivity. The area bursts into color every June with its famed Pride Parade.

Fort Lauderdale Beach: Less frenetic than Miami’s beaches, it offers a tranquil space to soak up the sun, with palm trees lining the promenade and the gentle waves of the Atlantic caressing the shores.

Things To Do

Stranahan House Museum: Step back in time and explore Fort Lauderdale’s oldest surviving structure. This historic home provides a glimpse into the life of the pioneers who transformed the city.

Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District: This vibrant area along the New River offers cultural venues, parks, and shops. It’s an epicenter for events, festivals, and the performing arts.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park: A peaceful oasis amidst the urban landscape, this park offers activities ranging from canoeing to bird-watching. The serene lagoons and tropical hammocks make it a must-visit.
